The Puzzle That Is Leek Orchids

There are many different type of orchid if you ask orchid suppliers but not many are a fan of the leek orchids. It might be contributed to the fact that it is not as gorgeous as other orchids in the family. Leek orchids are a native of Australia but they are small and grow on the ground. They are so called “leek orchids” because of its leaf which is very similar to a spring onion. The flowers can either be white, green or brown.

The unfortunate fact is that, similar to other native orchids, they are putting a fight against extinction. While there has been research on how to grow them, the most effective method still evades the experts. The process requires microscopic seeds of the leek orchids to integrate with fungi in order for germination to occur. This is the part where the experts are still far from figuring out.

Australia has over 1300 native orchid species while Native America only has around 200. Out of 1300, 140 are different kinds of leek orchids and majority thrives in bush lands all over southern Australia. Nearly one-third of these are not in danger of extinction because of various factors including agricultural expansion, weeds, fire regimes and reduction of rainfall patterns.

There are species of the leek orchids that are already wiped out the face of the earth like the Lilac Leek-orchid. In an effort to preserve the different orchid species, the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria is officially the largest orchid conservation facility in the planet. Dozens of native orchids that are on the brink of extinction have undergone successful reintroduction and propagation which saved the species.

The same cannot be said for leek orchids. Experts are yet to find a successful method to bring the number higher to save the species from extinction. Growing orchids is not easy because their seeds are microscopic. Due to its tiny size, it does not have any food to sustain the germinating seedling. This is why experts along with orchid suppliers are looking for ways in order to save this specific species because it might be a small part of the world but it consists of a bigger part when all the orchids in the world is subjected to extinction.
